From Dwaraphita to Pahuda

The day, as the temple keeps it

Times below are the customary windows — the Record of Rights, and the practice published around it. They are not a promise of the clock on a festival day.

  1. ଦ୍ୱାରଫିଟାDwaraphita

Servitors open the outer door, then the Kalahata door of the sanctum. The Record of Rights asks for this by half past four.

  2. ମଙ୍ଗଳ ଆଳତିMangala Alati

Three lamps — karpura, bati and pithau — offered below the Ratna Singhasana by the Bhitarchha Mahapatra and two Puspalakas.

  3. ମଇଲମMailam

Silk and flowers from the night are taken down.

  4. ଅବକାଶAbakasha

The morning cleansing: water, a mirror, the brushing of teeth — offered to wooden forms that are never soaked.

  5. ବେଶBesha

Fresh cloth and flowers. The day has a face.

  6. ସୂର୍ଯ୍ୟ ପୂଜାRosa Homa & Surya Puja

Fire is offered, and the sun is worshipped near the Muktimandapa.

  7. ସକାଳ ଧୂପSakala Dhupa

The morning mahaprasad. The kitchen has been at work since before dawn.

  8. ଭୋଗ ମଣ୍ଡପBhoga Mandapa

A portion of the offering is carried to the bhoga mandapa.

  9. ମଧ୍ୟାହ୍ନ ଧୂପMadhyahna Dhupa

Midday. This is the heart of the chhappan bhoga.

  10. ମଧ୍ୟାହ୍ନ ପହୁଡ଼Afternoon rest

After the great meal the sanctum is quiet. Public darshan pauses.

  11. ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟା ଦର୍ଶନEvening darshan

The precinct fills again. The lamps are still ahead.

  12. ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟା ଆଳତିSandhya Alati

Lamps, as at dawn. The day is handed over.

  13. ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟା ଧୂପSandhya Dhupa

Sandal paste with camphor and saffron is touched on after the meal.

  15. ବଡ଼ସିଂହାର ବେଶBadasinghara Besha

Baralagi patta — silk carrying Jayadeva’s couplets — then flowers, tulsi and dayana. The besha the night queue is for.

  16. ବଡ଼ସିଂହାର ଧୂପBadasinghara Dhupa

The last food of the day: pakhala, kadali bara, khiri.

  17. ପହୁଡ଼Pahuda

Niti hours are the customary windows. A festival, a slow seva, or the Lord’s own pace can move the next one. Images here are studies made for Nilachala — not photographs issued by the temple. A detail may differ from the murti you meet in Puri.
